CSA's General Contractor Roundtable is an ongoing program that provides a forum for an open, interactive dialogue to improve communications and efficiencies in the construction industry. During this meeting, a group of CSA general contractor members discussed issues of concern to subcontractors, including procurement, scheduling, and contracts.

John Hawley is vice president and business unit leader of Gilbane Building Company’s Connecticut office. In this role, he is responsible for the region’s overall sales, operations, and financial management with a focus on exceeding client expectations and providing strategic direction for Gilbane’s continued market growth in Connecticut. A construction industry veteran with more than 35 years of experience, John joined Gilbane in 1998 and has held several positions, including operations manager, project executive, and project manager, for numerous high-profile projects in New England. His resume features projects such as the Norwalk Capital Improvements program, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Danbury Hospital, and Southside Institution Neighborhood Alliance (SINA) The Learning Corridor. Today, John is the principal-in-charge for Gilbane’s projects in Connecticut, ensuring operational excellence for clients such as, Yale New Haven Health, University of Connecticut, Danbury Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, Fairfield University, and Yale University. An active member in industry organizations, John serves as the ex officio President of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) of Connecticut. John also serves as vice president of the Connecticut Building Congress Scholarship Fund. John graduated from Albertus Magnus College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. In addition, John earned an ASHE Healthcare Constructor Certification (HCC). John was named vice president in 2012. Dave has a 40-year career in senior level construction management and real estate development. His project experience spans municipal, higher ed, corporate office, industrial and research, as well as hotel and retail development from concept and permitting to closeout. In addition, Dave spent 5 years designing and distributing low voltage energy systems throughout South America and the Northeastern United States giving him a strong understanding of mechanical/electrical engineering and energy conservation/consumption. As President for Downes Construction, Dave is involved in direct marketing for new client base, sales presentations, profit/loss on awarded projects, long-range strategic planning, review of budgets and client liaison. Andrew Potts is Vice President of Operations at Suffolk. He has over 36 years of construction experience, primarily in the construction of hospital and healthcare spaces. In his role, Andrew serves as the responsible executive on several healthcare client projects, leading a team of project executives from preconstruction to construction, commissioning, and project closeout. Andrew’s current focus at Suffolk is driving innovation in building within demanding price and timeline parameters. He is leading the integration of Suffolk Illuminate strategies and tactics into healthcare projects to deliver high-reliability outcomes. Andrew has expertise in a variety of project delivery methods including Lump Sum, GMP, Integrated Project Delivery and Design-Build. He also has extensive experience in utilizing Lean tools, Pull Planning, Target Value Design, and Choosing by Advantage methods that help improve the delivery of healthcare construction projects. Andrew has led many important healthcare developments in New England. 23 of his 36 years in the construction industry have been exclusively dedicated to healthcare and life sciences projects and he has worked at several hospitals in Connecticut and most hospitals in the metro-Boston area. He is currently leading Suffolk’s team on the new Cape Cod Hospital patient tower, a project that is utilizing the Design-Build approach. Rick is a Senior Vice President who has been with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company for 36 years. Rick is out of the New Haven office and oversees the Connecticut operation. In addition, Rick is Whiting-Turner’s National Healthcare Leader, working with the company’s 60+ office locations to support, educate and promote healthcare construction. Rick Lives in New Haven, where he raised his three kids, with his wife of 38 years. Meet steve kaplan
Steve Kaplan is an attorney dedicated to Construction & Surety Law. A longtime Arbitrator and Mediator on the Construction and Commercial Panels for the American Arbitration Association and ADR, Inc., he has an in-depth knowledge of construction and contract law that enables him to serve the firm’s clients in multiple capacities. One of only two Master Mediators on the AAA Construction Mediation Panel for Connecticut, Steve has mediated approximately forty construction cases. He also is a founding member and past Chairman of the Connecticut Bar Association Construction Law Section. From 1987-2002, Steve taught Public Construction Contracts at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Since 2004, he has been an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Program for Construction Management at Central Connecticut State University, teaching Construction Law and Construction Financial Management on an annual basis. Steve is also a prolific writer on case law and current legal issues. From 1981 to 1982, he was Editor-in-Chief of the Connecticut Law Review. From 1995-2010, he co-edited the annual Connecticut Bar Association Construction Case Law Summary and Legislative Review. Despite a busy courtroom, teaching, and publishing schedule, Steve takes pride in staying in close contact with clients during and even after their cases, tailoring the services he offers to suit their individual needs. This dedication is one of the many reasons why he has been named as one of the Connecticut and New England Super Lawyers® in the area of Construction Litigation for many years running (2007-2020).
